Custom Graphic Overlays
The decorated face of your product — the part your customer touches, reads, and judges the product by. "It's just a printed label" is the most expensive sentence in HMI procurement.
A graphic overlay — also called a graphical overlay — is a screen- or digitally-printed film, die-cut to shape, usually adhesive-backed: the top layer of a membrane switch or a standalone faceplate over your own hardware. Essen Industries sources screen and digital overlay printing through vetted overlay manufacturers in Taiwan — on polycarbonate or hard-coated PET — supplied standalone with color, material, and adhesive control held to the print, or integrated as the front face of a complete box build.
Constructions we supply
Polycarbonate (PC)
0.010"–0.030"; excellent deep embossing, lower cost; fair chemical resistance. Pick it for static faceplates and budget.
Hard-coated polyester (PET)
0.006"–0.008" (Autotex-class); 1M+ flex life, excellent chemical resistance. The membrane-switch default — anything actuated, cleaned, or outdoors.
Reverse (second-surface) printing
Inks behind the clear substrate, so legends can't wear off. Standard for anything touched.
Digital printing
For low volume, versioning, or serialized overlays; no screen charges.
Typical specifications
| PET thickness | 0.006"–0.008" hard-coated |
|---|---|
| PC thickness | 0.010"–0.030" |
| PET flex life | 1M+ actuations over domes |
| Color match | PMS spot colors, target ΔE ≤ 2–3 under D65; measured ΔE reported on first articles |
| Emboss rise | Typically 1.5–2× material thickness |
| Adhesives | 3M 467MP / 468MP; 3M 300LSE-class for low-surface-energy plastics |
| Die-cut tolerance | ±0.010" standard |
Typical values — confirmed per design at quote.
Options that earn their cost
Dead-front graphics
Indicators invisible until backlit. Specify legends and off-state density; printable and checkable.
Windows
Clear gloss for displays, anti-glare texture, tinted for LED masking; selective gloss/matte so keys read by feel.
Embossing
Rail (rim), pillow (full-key), or dome emboss over tactile domes.
Zoned adhesive
Kept clear of display windows and dome areas by design.
The notes we make constantly
A free sample of what comes back with every quote.
We spec the actual film (and say so on the drawing), not just "polyester, 7 mil" — two 7-mil polyesters with different hardcoats age completely differently under IPA wipes.
Overlay returns are adhesive returns more often than print returns. We spec name-brand systems and hold factories to them.
Substituted adhesive is a rejectable defect on our inspections, not a factory's cost-saving prerogative.
We flag emboss-to-die-cut spacing that won't survive tooling before you commit to it.
MOQs, lead times & tooling
| MOQ | Typically 100–250 pieces; digital print makes short runs cheap |
|---|---|
| Prototypes | Typically 7–12 days, laser-cut |
| Production | Typically 3–5 weeks ex-factory + air freight; delivered |
| Tooling | Films / screens / dies owned by you |
| Origin | Made in Taiwan, ISO 9001 facilities, CO docs per shipment |
Ranges are typical — confirmed on your quote.
Frequently asked
Is this screen printing or digital printing?
Both. Most production overlays are screen printed — screen-printed overlays give the densest, most durable color, and we reverse-print behind the clear substrate so legends can't wear off. For low volume, versioning, or serialized parts we run digital overlay printing, which skips screen charges. On textured film, screen-print color shifts with the texture, so we match against your physical standard and report ΔE on first articles.
Can you do polycarbonate overlays?
Yes. A polycarbonate overlay (0.010"–0.030" PC) is the right call for static faceplates and deep embossing on a budget — PC embosses well and costs less, with fair chemical resistance. For anything actuated over domes, cleaned, or outdoors, we'd steer you to hard-coated PET instead, since flex life is the deciding spec. Both are printed and converted the same way.
Can you match our existing colors and texture?
Yes — send physical color standards (not just PMS numbers) and a sample of the current part. Screen-print color on textured film shifts with the texture; we match against the physical standard and report ΔE on first articles.
PC or PET for a membrane switch overlay?
PET, almost always — flex life over domes is the deciding spec. PC is the right call for static faceplates and deep embossing on a budget.
Do you print UL-recognized constructions?
Where the application needs a rated label construction, we quote materials and constructions accordingly — tell us the end-product standard and environment, and we spec to it rather than guess.
